Thierry Damerval named as deputy director-general of Inserm

Thierry Damerval has been named as deputy director-general of Inserm. He is the current deputy director-general for strategy and, in addition to his current functions, he will now take on those of Hervé Douchin, Inserm's deputy director-general for administrative and financial matters, recently nominated as the inspector general of administration for national education and first-class research.

At 49, Thierry Damerval has become Inserm's deputy director-general. Born in 1961, and a former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Saint Cloud, he holds an agrégation (high-level teaching diploma) in physical sciences and a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Paris Diderot. Thierry Damerval began his career in the bacterial physiology unit at the Institut Pasteur.

In 1993, he joined CEA as assistant to the director of life sciences and manager of the Cellular Organisation and Function Programme. He went on to occupy various executive positions within CEA until 2005.

Between June 2005 and January 2006, he was technical adviser in charge of research and innovation in the French Prime Minister's Office and then director of the Office of the Deputy Minister for Higher Education and Research until May 2007.

Since 2007, he has been Inserm's deputy director-general for strategy.

Thierry Damerval is a Knight of the Legion of Honour, a Knight in the National Order of Merit and a Knight of the Order of Academic Palms.

André Syrota, Chairman and CEO at Inserm, wishes to pay tribute to the work accomplished by Hervé Douchin in serving Inserm over the last 10 years, as general secretary and then as deputy director-general for administrative and financial affairs. His skills, his considerable experience acquired at CNRS and then at Inserm, and his knowledge of research organisations and universities will constitute a formidable asset for IGAENR (the general inspectorate of France's national education and research administration).
