Keratinocytes in culture
Revealed by immunofluorescence, these cells cluster together to form the epidermal tissue of the skin.
Section of skin obtained artificially by culture
We can mainly see the epidermis with a stratum corneum (horned layer) that is breaking off, a phenomenon of desquamation. This is an essential defense mechanism of the skin. It acts as a protection barrier against physical, chemical and biological stress.
Human skin, global structure
Under the surface we can distinguish the multi-stratified stratum corneum of the epidermis, the middle and deep layers (strata granulosum, spinosum and basale) of the epidermis, and the dermis rich in collagen fibers. x300.
