Ingrid Grummt is director of research at the German cancer research center in Heidelberg. Her work has made it possible to better understand how gene expression is regulated inside a cell. Indeed, not all of the genes of a cell are expressed at the same time. Some are reduced to silence by mechanisms qualified as "epigenetic". Ingrid has contributed greatly to understanding of the molecular bases of these mechanisms.
