Science on the Square, 9th edition

From 12 September 2014 to 14 September 2014

Nancy – A event not to be missed at the Le Livre sur la Place (Books on the Square) fair, the literary space “Les Sciences sur la Place” (Science on the Square) presents the best of the popular scientific literature once again this year. Come to discover, among other things, “Au Cœur du Vivant” (The Heart of the Living), a beautiful book that retraces the history of Inserm.

The literary space Les Sciences sur la Place at the Le Livre sur la Place book fair is an unmissable end of summer event, an opportunity to find the most significant books and the latest must-see titles in the world of science. Again this year, nearly 1,500 scientific works aimed at the general public will be presented and offered for sale. At least 24 authors will also come to meet the public at book signings and informal science discussions.

The 2014 programme of informal science discussions is especially noteworthy:

La science: toute une histoire!” (Science—quite a history!) will be the subject of the discussion on Friday the 12th, with Pascal Griset, co-author of the book on Inserm’s 50-year history, Au Cœur du Vivant (The Heart of the Living), publ. Cherche-midi, and Denis Guthleben, author of L’histoire du CNRS de 1939 à nos jours (The History of the CNRS from 1939 to the present).

On a (perhaps) lighter note, the discussion on Saturday the 13th will examine the subject of “fesses: critères de beauté universel?” (bottoms: a universal criterion of beauty?) with sociologist Jean-Claude Kaufmann, author of the book La Guerre des Fesses (The War of the Bottoms), publ. J.C. Lattès.

And on 13 September, Déborah Kessler (author of Guérisseurs Contre Sorciers dans la Lorraine du 21e Siècle, [Healers versus Witches in 21st Century Lorraine], publ. Serpenoise), Jacques Fleurentin (author of Du Bon Usage des Plantes qui Soignent [Good Use of Curative Plants], Éditions Ouest France) and François Math (author of Guérisseurs et Médecines Non Conventionnelles [Healers and Unconventional Medicines], Presses Universitaires de Nancy) will ask the question about medical alternatives: “Plantes et guérisseurs: une autre médecine est-elle possible?” (Plants and healers—is another medicine possible?).

Speaker from Inserm:

Pascal Griset, co-auteur of the book Au Coeur du Vivant will be signing his book on Friday 12 September 2014, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. He will participate in the informal discussion “La science: toute une histoire!” from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.
