Les Utopiales 2014: Intelligence, Science and Fiction

"Intelligence" in all its forms is the theme of this year’s Les Utopiales, The Nantes International Science Fiction. Festival Inserm will be present at the event.

For the last 15 years, Les Utopiales, The Nantes International Science Fiction Festival, has been aimed at opening up the world of the future, new technologies and the imaginary to as many people as possible, and helping them to discover it in a highly qualitative way. It offers a wide view of all that is new in science fiction. Each year, a central theme is chosen for the festival. For this new edition, “Intelligence” will be the slogan for Les Utopiales.

Whether earthly, extraterrestrial or artificial, intelligence is a recurring subject in works of science fiction. Throughout the festival, the scientists, writers and artists present will exchange their points of view—sometimes contradictory—at round tables.

Inserm is participating in the event via a play, round tables and an exhibition:

Theatre

Binome – Swan Song or Death, the Machine and the Maiden
A play inspired by a meeting between the author Sabryna Pierre and Karim Jerbi, a neuroscientist at Inserm specialising in the brain-machine interface.

Exhibition

Researching Art

The result of a partnership between Inserm and the Arles École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (ENSP), this exhibition shows photographs taken by second-year students in Inserm’s research laboratories. Four themes have been addressed: distortion, identification, strategies and heritage.
